What’s love got to do with it is a 1984 song by Tina Turner. She called love “a second hand emotion,” which, in her world may be true, but, in our world as followers of Jesus Christ, it is something totally different, because LOVE has got everything to do with who we are, where we are and where we are going.
Romans 5:6-8 “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
These passage is very powerful. We have all seen movies about what the FBI does for an American President, how they are willing to put their lives on the line just to preserve his or he life. But from all the movies that I have watched, after the President is safe, the FBI agent that put his life on the line for him is given an award or a reward of some sort, in situations where the agent did not survive, he is still rewarded, only post humously. Now I bet if some of us were FBI agents, we will put our lives in the line of fire for a President. But now we have someone that has put the life of His Son down for us, what kind of reward are we giving Him?, what kind of award have we given Him?. For someone that saved our lives from death, what are we giving Him?
The way the Lord saved us through Jesus is not only then, but still continues till now, and will continue in day, months and years to come. The bible says that God demonstrated His love to us while we were sinners, and now that we have been redeemed will He not demonstrate more love to us? If this is what the Lord is to us, can we honestly say that we are loving Him the way we should love someone that stood as a line of defense between us and death, and stands in the line of fire for us now?
Unlike the FBI agent that only save the President from bullets, the Lord saves us from every kind of trouble on earth, and still gives us a hope for a future in heaven, all at a simple price that He has paid.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
God loves us, God paid the price, God loves us, God gave His son for us, what manner of love is this?
We need to begin to find ways to love Him back, ways that show our true appreciation of Him, and that starts with doing what He has asked us to do. Our following the commands of God has got everything to do with our salvation, our doing His will shows that we love Him. Jesus notes in John 14:15 NLT “If you love me, obey my commandments,” so yes, love has got everything to do with it, with our salvation and with our eternity.
