Planning Is Not A Sin

Planning Is Not A Sin

Some Christians believe that planning for the future is wrong because, as Christians, we are to be led by the Holy Spirit. In their mind, we should adhere to this passage. Matthew 6:34 NLT -“so don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today”. This passage talks about worrying about tomorrow, which is very different from planning for tomorrow or the future.

According to Merriam- Webster dictionary, planning is the act or process of making or carrying out plans. A plan is a detailed proposal, arrangements, or activities set out beforehand to achieve an objective or desired goal. A goal could be retirement age and income required, travel around the world, or mission work in a distant land. To achieve any of these goals, it is incumbent on you to plan in terms of what is required to achieve this goal, when you need it, and how you will obtain the necessary resources to achieve the goal. This will then require a detailed plan of what is required to achieve the goal. This is necessary for us as Christians as well.

The Bible urges us to plan, and so we should. Proverbs 6:6-8 NKJV”Go to the ant, you sluggard! consider her ways and be wise, [7] Which, having no captain, overseer, or ruler. [8] Provides her supplies in the summer and gathers her food in the harvest”.

Jesus Christ, our saviour, also talked about planning in Luke 14:28-32 NKJV: if one is going to build a tower, plans a made first to account for the cost and what is needed to complete. Or even a king develops a strategy before going to war. (v.32) “Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace”.

Failure to plan means we are planning to fail, so says the maxim.
The key is to have a plan, commit it to God and be ready to alter it to whichever direction God is leading us. In conclusion, I am leaving us with the Bible passages below for reflection and meditation.
Proverbs 16:3 NLT – “Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 21:5 NLT- “Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.”
